When is it worthwhile to buy organic fruit?
There is a lot of conflicting information out there about organic fruit. Should I switch to it completely? Is there enough evidence out there to do so? Well, if you’re on the fence about switching, one way to go is partly organic; getting the most value for your health and dollar by knowing which fruits are known to be the most or least likely to be contaminated by pesticides.
Highest Pesticide Content (grown by conventional farming):
- Peach
- Pear
- Apple
- Strawberry
- Nectarine
- Cherry
- Red Raspberry
Lowest Pesticide Content (grown by conventional farming):
- Avocado
- Pineapple
- Mango
- Watermelon
- Kiwi
- Papaya
- Grapefruit
Tip: Switch to organic for the fruits that are high in pesticides when grown normally. If it is difficult to find organic versions of these items, the next best option is to buy them when they are in season from local producers. By doing so, you’ll avoid the most pesticide exposure and will garner the most nutritional value!
